Overstock Paper Donation Program

As a large printer, we often are required to bring in speciality paper stock for unique projects. Occasionally, the packaging of paper does not match up with our orders perfectly, so we have small amounts of this speciality paper left over that we are unable to use for other projects. Rather than let this go to waste, we would like these products to be put to use.

White Ink: New possibilities with the Indigo 7500

Knockout

White ink on black paper

Printing in true white ink has been a limitation of traditional offset printing for many years – and usually is substituted with white foils to achieve the desired results. Offset white inks generally lack opacity and can require additional passes through the press. This results in a longer, more expensive project without a guarantee that your whites aren’t flat or muddy.

So most clients choose to simply knockout their white elements, as it is more consistent and generally won’t increase your costs. But this can limit your design and substrate choices. What about a white ink that does not have the same design limitations and can fit most budgets?

With the addition of the HP Indigo 7500 to Hemlock’s fleet of presses, printing white ink with offset quality on a coloured or transparent substrate became a lot easier.

AIGA San Francisco Compostmodern and the Unconference

Back in January, our very own Richard Kouwenhoven attended the Unconference at AIGA San Francisco’s Compostmodern where Sappi Fine Paper gave a workshop called Navigating Sustainability and Designing for Print.

Sappi recently released this video on a vibrant discussion about print, paper, and the environment, which featured Laura Thompson Ph.D., Sappi’s Director of Technical Marketing and Sustainable Development; Beto Lopez, Senior Designer of IDEO’s Sustainability Initiative and Allan Chochinov, Core77 Partner and Advisory Member of the Designers Accord. Participants engaged in an open dialogue about the entire print life cycle and left participants with a framework for making the best sustainability decisions as they move forward with their design work.

You’ve probably seen us around town

If you’ve seen any of the promotional material for the Projecting Change Film Festival that’s happening this weekend, it’s all thanks to Hemlock Printers. The Burnaby-based company that’s been winning awards for its practices in sustainability was responsible for printing and donating all of the posters, cards, and pamphlets for the event. And all of it was done in carbon-neutral fashion.

I (Bryce Tarling) was asked to put together a brief interview with the company to learn more about what the company does to promote sustainability. Check out the interview with Richard below!
